The Calypso Networks Association (CNA), which brings together transportation operators and authorities to evolve contactless ticketing systems, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The association was created in 2003 to regulate, develop and promote the international Calypso standard for contactless ticketing, which is now used in 30 countries, by more than 170 cities and regions.

The Calypso standard is unique in that it was designed by the public transport community, for the public transport community. It was created in the late 1990s by an initiative of several European authorities and operators who joined forces to develop the standard as part of a subsidized European project. At the end of the project, these partners founded the Calypso Networks Association to ensure that the Calypso standard would always remain sustainable, open and accessible to all, multi-vendor and always at the forefront of innovation.

«After 20 years, this is an undeniable success. Calypso has become a unique example of a technology standard owned by its users. CNA members continue to collaboratively guide the direction of the association, which has grown from six members in 2003 to more than 100 today on four continents. The mobility community can be assured that Calypso will be there for the next two decades, ensuring everyone’s right to travel through a ticketing model that responds in the most innovative and effective way to the needs of citizens», said Gianluca Cuzzolin, president of CNA.
