CaetanoBus and Temsa have announced they are about to launch a jointly-developed fuel cell coach in 2024. The vehicle will be based on the battery-electric Temsa HD12, with fuel cell technology coming from CaetanoBus partner (and shareholder) Toyota.

The nascent fuel cell coach segment is then starting to get some “population”, with Irizar launching at Busworld 2023 in Brussels (that opens on 7th October) its i6S Efficient Hydrogen.

CaetanoBus – Temsa fuel cell coach ready in 2024

The goal of the partners is to enter series production in 2025. A 2-axle version will be the first to be produced, and a 3-axle version will follow suit. According to the information released so far, the vehicles will be able to use both 350 bar and 700 bar hydrogen, thanks to Toyota H2 Dual System technology.

Coach range? The partners claims it’ll be able to run for up to 1,000 km on a single refueling.

CaetanoBus underlines that the company “is very knowledgeable about coach operational requirements once is the manufacturer of the National Express coaches’ fleet for the UK as well as for several operators in Iberic market”.

CaetanoBus is focusing a lot on the segment of fuel cell city buses. In the first half of 2023 96 units were registered in Europe in that segment, vs the 52 of last year (+84%). CaetanoBus places first with 28 units, followed closely by Van Hool with 26. The latter is still leading the market in the period 2012 – June 2023 with 132 registrations. Germany is at the moment the country with the most fuel cell buses in operation (without considering those registered before 2012): 167 vehicles.

TMB has put into service, for the first time in Spain, a fuel cell bus on a public transport network.

On Thursday 7 April, users of line X1 will be able to travel with this innovative zero-emission vehicle, produced by CaetanoBus, which is loaded at Iberdrola’s green hydrogen plant.

Tomorrow Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will put Barcelona’s first hydrogen bus into service on line X1, the semi-direct XPRESBus service that connects the city centre with the intermodal hubs of Francesc Macià and Glòries.

This is the first time that this type of renewable energy vector has been generated in Spain for commercial use and with fleet capacity, making TMB and Iberdrola pioneers in the decarbonisation of heavy urban mobility. Eight vehicles are going to be put into service.

Caetano hydrogen buses delivered

The vehicle delivered by Caetano, the H2 City Gold, arrived last December (and was purchased within JIVE 2 European programme) and has been undergoing a period of testing without passengers, which is now coming to an end. This bus, which emits only water vapour, will be supplied with green hydrogen (about 20 kilos per day) from the supply plant located in the Zona Franca industrial estate, near the depot where it will be based, promoted by TMB and owned by Iberdrola, which has been supported with a grant from the Connecting Europe Facilities for Transport programme of the European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment (CINEA).

The new zero-emission hydrogen bus manufactured by CaetanoBus for TMB is a standard bus, 12 metres long, with a lightweight aluminium body with three doors. It features Toyota fuel cell, rated at 60 kW, and five type 4 hydrogen tanks with a total capacity of 37.5 kg H2 storage.

The Siemens traction motor delivers a maximum output of 180 kW and the ELFA 2 voltage inverter, also from Siemens, manages all the engine power. The hydrogen system is complemented by the LTO-type lithium-ion technology traction batteries with a total capacity of 44 kWh, where the energy generated by the fuel cell and the regenerative braking system is stored.

Abellio London’s Walworth depot has clocked up over two million electric bus miles. 34 Caetano e.City Gold electric buses were introduced during 2020 on two London routes. The Abellio London-operated buses have been running on routes P5 (Nine Elms-Elephant and Castle) and C10 (Canada Water-Victoria), out of Abellio’s Walworth depot in South-East London.

The two million miles clocked-up equate to: 10m customer journey, a saving of 3,647 tonnes of carbon emissions from bus exhausts*, a saving of 1,609kg of nitrogen oxides, a particularly toxic pollutant**

The Caetano e.City Gold buses are the first of their type built specifically for the UK market and incorporate advanced safety features and better accessibility. They include fully flat flooring throughout, rear-view cameras, Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) and Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS), which generates artificial vehicle sounds for vulnerable road users.

Abellio London Bus Managing Director Jon Eardley said: “Walworth is the first of our depots to operate electric buses with five out of our six depots being upgraded to run zero-emissions buses by autumn 2022. This will take Abellio London’s operation of electric buses to over 15% of the fleet size. These cutting-edge electric vehicles further strengthen our position of operating one of the cleanest bus fleets in the UK. We meet the minimum emission standard of Euro VI for internal combustion engine vehicles, and more than half of our fleet of 900 buses are diesel-electric hybrid vehicles. We are committed to introducing further, best-in-class electric buses and look forward to making a significant contribution towards the Mayor of London’s vision of having a complete zero-emissions bus system in the capital by 2030.”

Caetano electric buses in Abellio London bus fleet

Abellio London Bus driver Kingsford Koi-Otto has driven the Caetano electric buses from day one, clocking up over 24,000 electric miles – the equivalent of driving to New Zealand and back. He said: “With the advanced safety features and a modern specification, these buses are even more comfortable and safe to drive. They are a step-up in terms of overall experience, and help us to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey for customers.”

Nuno Carvalho, Caetano UK Board Director and CCO at CaetanoBus said: “We are delighted with this achievement on the e.City Gold electric bus, proving its operation within the London bus market. We look forward to working closely with Abellio London for the next two million miles on these vehicles and on future orders.”

Louise Cheeseman, TfL’s Director of Buses, said: “On just two routes, these numbers show the huge number of people taking advantage of convenient, affordable bus travel, and just how many tonnes of harmful emissions that buses can save – making a significant contribution towards reducing the effects of climate change and helping people breathe cleaner air.

“This demonstrates how transformative the impact will be when scaled and the entire London bus fleet is zero emission. We already have more than 800 zero-emission buses in operation across the city, but sustained Government funding is essential if we are to convert the entire network at the pace required to help tackle the climate emergency and address the capital’s toxic air crisis.”

* Calculation based on 2019 fleet average diesel bus emissions (fuel consumption only) of 1,282g per km (source: decarbon8.org.uk). Calculations also take into account carbon emissions associated with production and maintenance etc for diesel buses and carbon emissions associated with battery production and electricity generation etc for electric buses.

** There are no NOx emissions associated with electric vehicles. The figure is calculated from the emissions factors for diesel vehicles. Over the two million miles the NOx saving is around 1,600 kg based on the following emissions factor: NOx emissions factor – 0.5 g/km.
