CRRC and BYD secured two tenders for electric buses in Southern Italy (99 and 45 units respectively). The news have been reported on Italian trade media Autobusweb (belonging to the same publisher of Sustainable Bus)

Bari is indeed going to receive 99 electric buses from CRRC, following the tender awarded to YES EU, dealer of Yutong in the Nordics. The state-owned CRRC is a giant in the railway sector and is already active in Europe through the partnership with Hungarian Ikarus. Financed through funds from the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, the project has a budget of €42,768,000 plus VAT. It’s unclear which model will be provided, if the E12 or the latest add U12, but it’s most likely it’ll be the first one.

Taranto, another city in Southern Italy, in the same Puglia region as Bari, will receive 45 electric buses and 67 plug-in charging stations, valued at €33.3 million. The buses will be provided by BYD, that has just landed a 92-units order in Belgium from De Lijn.

Errata corrige: a first version of this article mentioned Yutong as winner of the tender in Bari, instead of the brand effectively bidded by YES EU (so far known for the dealership of Yutong e-buses in the Nordics)

Bari, the tender requirements

The specifications for the electric buses tendered in Bari emphasize accessibility, sustainability, and passenger comfort. The buses, ranging from 11.50 to 13 meters, must meet specific width and height limits, accommodating a minimum of 70 passengers, including seating for at least 20 and provisions for a wheelchair user.

The structural framework must be steel, aluminum, or equivalent materials, ensuring weldability and corrosion resistance. The modular design of the chassis allows partial replacements as needed, contributing to the longevity and sustainability of the fleet.

The electric buses must achieve a daily range of 185 km between recharges Additionally, the buses must integrate an HVAC system for passenger and driver comfort, operating solely on battery power, eliminating the need for auxiliary fuel.

BYD is set to revamp a defunct Ford factory in Camaçari, Bahia, Brazil, as reported on Brazilian report. This factory closed in January 2021, causing the loss of 4,000 jobs. Chinese giant BYD plans to create three new facilities, with production expected to begin by the end of the next year, aiming for an annual output of 150,000 vehicles initially.

In late 2022, BYD announced the delivery of 100 e-bus chassis in São Paulo in early 2023. The company, with a factory in Brazil since 2015, has the capacity to produce 2,000 chassis per year. The first locally-built e-bus for Brazil was unveiled in 2021. What is worth noting, São Paulo has banned procurement of new diesel buses: 2,600 e-buses expected in operation by end 2024.

BYD builds electric vehicles factory in Brazil

As communicated by BYD itself in July, one factory will focus on chassis for electric buses and trucks, another on electric and hybrid vehicles, and the third on processing components for export, according to the media.

This venture is projected to generate 5,000 jobs in Bahia, with BYD investing approximately BRL 3 billion (USD 580 million) and receiving tax incentives from the Bahia state government over ten years. This signifies a substantial step for both BYD and the Brazilian electric vehicle market.

electrive.com observes that “For BYD, the facilities in Bahia are not the first production sites in Brazil. The company already manufactures electric bus chassis in Campinas in the Brazilian state of São Paulo and operates a lithium iron phosphate battery assembly plant in Manaus, the capital of the Brazilian state of Amazonas. BYD is also reportedly planning to build a battery materials factory in Chile”.

Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD and CEO of BYD Americas. “These new factories in Bahia will bring innovation and the highest standards in technology, this will allow the introduction and acceleration of electromobility in the country, a key movement to combat climate change and really improve people’s quality of life.”

BYD has delivered in Chile the first double-decker electric buses headed to the RED Mobility system. These are 10 BYD B12C01 buses.

“The story of the electrification of public transport began hand in hand with BYD in Chile in 2017 when the first two electric buses began operating, a year later 100 were incorporated, the largest fleet outside China and for this year, adding the 10 double-deckers, it is expected to reach 800 100% electric buses”, BYD sums up.

Double-decker electric buses for Chile, a real first

Among the internal features of the BYD B12C01 are that all double-decker buses have 30 USB ports distributed in the passenger area, with built-in wifi and air conditioning. Implemented with 69 seats distributed on both floors. In addition, it has 6 priority seats. These buses also incorporate an XL seat and a preferential area for wheelchairs. The total capacity of these buses is 97 passengers. The stated range is 280 km.

The buses, specially designed for Chile, are 12.128 meters long and 4.170 meters high, with an approximate weight of 16.5 tons.

“In Chile we have been pioneers in the implementation of electric buses for public transportation. This new and important milestone of bringing the first double-decker electric buses to the country, positions us once again at the forefront of electromobility throughout the region and the continent. At BYD we are proud to be able to continue contributing to improving the quality of life of Chileans through the electrification of transportation. BYD Chile has established itself in the country as a leader in the electric bus market. We were the first to bet on electromobility in public transportation and today we are the first to bring the electric double-decker buses. The success of what we see today is also due to the fact that we have generated alliances to create an ecosystem around electromobility, with a charging system, with infrastructure from the hand of an energy supplier and, of course, thanks to an innovative and reliable operator that takes the risk of testing and advancing”, says Tamara Berríos, Country Manager of BYD Chile

Go-Ahead has signed a repeat order for 141 BYD – Alexander Dennis electric buses. Such purchase will bring the total to be delivered to the operator during 2023 to 299 vehicles.

They will take the total number of BYD–Alexander Dennis electric buses in the Go-Ahead London fleet to 577, confirming the company as the largest operator of the partnership’s clean buses. More than two thirds of all zero-emission buses currently in service or on order for Transport for London routes have been supplied by the BYD–Alexander Dennis partnership, the manufacturers say.

Go-Ahead orders other BYD – Alexander Dennis e-buses

This new order follows Go-Ahead London’s success in winning contracts for bus routes tendered by Transport for London. TfL’s vision is to accelerate the delivery of an entirely zero-emission bus fleet by 2030, a target that requires continued Government investment.

In total, 169 BYD–Alexander Dennis Enviro400EV double deckers and 130 BYD–Alexander Dennis Enviro200EV single deckers are expected to be supplied by the end of 2023, with deliveries already under way, manufacturer highlights. All the double deckers will be 10.8m long, while the single deckers will be built to three different lengths of 9.6m, 10.2m and 10.9m to suit different route profiles and passenger volumes.

Go-Ahead London Engineering Director, Richard Harrington, said: “As the capital’s largest, and most experienced electric bus company, we are in the process of introducing around 300 zero-emission vehicles this year. This pace of innovation would not be possible without dependable industry partners like BYD and Alexander Dennis, who are building these new buses to our exacting specification. This now includes an eye-catching new interior with high-backed seats and additional amenities, which is proving very popular with the travelling public.”

BYD UK Managing Director, Frank Thorpe, said: “We are very pleased to support Go-Ahead London once again with another significant electric bus order, as it continues to expand its zero-emission fleets. It underlines how effectively BYD–Alexander Dennis buses are providing an efficient and reliable solution for operators seeking to introduce more eco-friendly bus services. BYD is dedicated to developing innovative and effective EV technology for a more sustainable future and to see how operators, such as Go-Ahead, are embracing ‘electric’ is making the ‘green dream’ come alive.”

Alexander Dennis President & Managing Director, Paul Davies, said: “We’re delighted that the largest single operator of electric buses in the UK has again chosen the BYD–Alexander Dennis partnership. This takes the number of our zero-emission buses in the Go-Ahead London fleet to well over 500, representing a stunning vote of confidence in these reliable, cost-effective buses. We look forward to continuing to develop our relationship with Go-Ahead London and supporting the further electrification of its fleet.”

Alexander Dennis and BYD UK electric vehicle partnership has taken a firm order from National Express West Midlands for a further 170 double deck electric buses, to be delivered by the end of 2024. Such investment was already announced by the operator earlier this year. Now it has been announced that they’ll be manufacturer by Alexander Dennis – BYD joint venture.

The new order will take the number of BYD AD Enviro400EV buses operated by National Express in the West Midlands to 329. The fleet, which will be the largest of the type in the UK, includes an earlier order for 130 buses that are part of the UK Government’s ambitions to make Coventry the country’s first All-Electric Bus City by 2025.

Over half of the 130 BYD AD Enviro400EV buses ordered are already operating on National Express bus routes across Coventry.

National Express to have zero emission bus fleet by 2030

The continued investment is part of National Express delivering on its commitment to have a completely zero-emission bus fleet in the UK by 2030. The electricity to power the electric vehicles will be 100% renewable and zero carbon.

alexander dennis west midlands

Tom Stables, CEO National Express UK & Germany, said: “Replacing our diesel buses with electric means we are on track to meet net zero in a way that is good for business and good for communities. These new British buses, built in Falkirk by Alexander Dennis on a BYD chassis, are clean, green double decker buses that are popular with customers. As a result, they are not only more economical to run but they will boost passenger growth and revenue by getting more people to ditch their cars for the bus; and of course they do their bit to help tackle the climate and clean air emergency.”

Alexander Dennis Group Commercial Director, Martin West, said: “At Alexander Dennis, we are proud to lead the charge with solutions that move hearts and minds. We are excited to help National Express deliver its ambitious plans in support of the West Midlands’ target to become a zero-carbon region by 2041. This repeat order from National Express will create the largest fleet of BYD AD Enviro400EV electric double deck buses in the country and shows the gathering pace of the transition to zero-emission mobility.”

Frank Thorpe, Managing Director, BYD UK, said: “This is yet another considerable electric bus order and we are delighted to support National Express as it continues to make significant headway in replacing its diesel bus fleets with clean electric alternatives. Through our partnership with Alexander Dennis, we combine our niche areas of expertise, including BYD’s world-leading battery technology to bring safe, reliable, non-polluting solutions to make public bus services more sustainable, and ever more appealing to a broader range of passengers.”

BYD’s plan to supply a small electric bus (Poncho Z EV) to Hino Motors, a Toyota unit, has been cancelled after it was revealed that the bus was built using a toxic chemical that is banned under Japanese industry guidelines, according to an article by Nikkei Asia.

The vehicles was planned to be supplied by BYD to Hino under an original equipment manufacturer contract (originally the kickoff of the vehicle was planned in spring 2022, according to a press communication by Hino).

Hino stops deal with BYD for small e-bus for Japan

The Poncho Z EV, says the article that is based on “sources familiar with the matter”, contains hexavalent chromium, which is considered toxic and a harmful carcinogen. Although there are no laws prohibiting the use of the substance in Japan, it is on a list of substances voluntarily banned by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association in 2008.

Hino Motors said that it had abandoned plans to release the 30-seat bus for the Japanese market after being unable to negotiate with BYD to build the bus without using the chemical.

“EV buses for the Japanese market meet all required laws and standards,” BYD’s Japan unit told Nikkei. When asked about the use of hexavalent chromium, the company declined to comment, says the media.

Reuters add that “Hino declined to comment when contacted by Reuters. A BYD Japan spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.”.

Nikkei Asia also says that “BYD’s electric buses had been gaining popularity in Japan, with 80 already in use, according to its Japan unit. The company’s share of the Japanese electric-bus market is 70% or so. Shares in BYD were at one point down 2.5% on Wednesday in the Hong Kong market. The company’s stock price has fallen over 4% in less than a week following Hino’s decision to abandon its plans to release BYD’s compact EV bus”.

BYD, Iveco Bus, Industria Italiana Autobus, Solaris: four bidders for the 340-units electric bus tender issued by ATM Milano in November 2022. The news is reported on Italian trade media Autobusweb.

As of summer 2022, there were some 170 electric buses in operation in Milan, with the target of reaching 250 by end 2022. All of them carry Solaris‘ logo: the Polish manufacturer was awarded a first contract for 25 vehicles and won second order for 250 units in July 2019.

Milan tender electric buses: 340 vehicles up for grabs

It is worth mentioning the absence of groups such as Daimler Buses, MAN and Irizar. Karsan, which has recently entered the market aggressively, also did not presented bid. VDL, fresh from launching its new Citea range, and a plethora of exotic manufacturers chose to stay away from a tender with several challenging requirements.

Nothing has been leaked about specific offers, especially about which of the three lots the manufacturers have targeted. In principle, Iveco Bus and Solaris will face each other on both sizes (12 and 18 meters), while IIA may have targeted only the 12 meters, only because the 18 meter has not yet been seen in circulation. BYD? Anything can happen beyond the Great Wall. Although here in Italy, the articulated BYD buses are today zero.

ATM Milano, a recap of the three lots

The first lot consists on the supply of 205 battery-electric buses, approximately 12 metres long, in a 3 double-door configuration, including full-service maintenance. Estimated value (excluding VAT) of EUR 183,022,012.37. The duration of the contract, which is non-renewable, is 202 months.

The second lot is also non-renewable, but has a slightly shorter framework agreement duration (199 months). It consists of the supply of 105 electric, battery-powered buses of approximately 18 metres, in a 4 double-door configuration, including full-service maintenance. Estimated amount, excluding VAT: EUR 125,761,274.63.

Finally, the third, with a duration of 3 years non-renewable and a value of 21 million euro. This is a three-year framework agreement for the supply of up to 30 e-buses for city service of about 12 metres, in 2-door and 3-door configuration with a minimum guarantee of 2 years on the entire vehicle.

BYD has been awarded an e-bus order in Sweden from Transdev AB for 52 vehiclees. It’s the largest order that Transdev has placed with BYD for electric buses since 2015, when it first introduced the BYD brand to its fleet.

This new order comprises 8 units of 12-metre low-floor BYD e-buses and 44 units of 15-metre low-entry BYD vehicles. They will be delivered to the province of Gästrikland on the east coast of Sweden.

There are now more than 700 BYD e-buses, in service or on order, within the Nordic Region, and over 3,000 in Europe, manufacturer says. According to the just-released figures on 2022 electric bus market in Europe, BYD has registered 322 vehicles in 2022, with a market share of 7.8%

The 15-metre BYD e-buses, representing the majority of the latest order from Transdev, benefit from upgraded BYD Iron-Phosphate Battery technology for enhanced safety, range and reliability.

The 15-metre BYD electric buses have a range of 450 km (SORT II), the Chinese group says.

“Fundamental to the overall performance is BYD’s unique 6-in-1 controller integrating the entire ecosystem of the bus for improved reliability and increased operational efficiency. Intelligent systems are pivotal to optimised range, safety and comfort, and include BYD’s highly efficient Battery Thermal Management System, enabling the buses to reliably operate in extreme climatic conditions”, BYD says.

BYD – Transdev: 52 out of 66 e-buses in regional operations

Fredrik Beckius, General Manager Transdev in Gästrikland/Hälsingland, said, “We are very pleased to be able to help drive the transition to a zero-emission fleet in the region. BYD is one of the market leaders in electric buses and their products are well-matched to the requirements set in the procurement process. The fact that as many as 52 out of 66 regional buses will be powered by electricity will have a significant impact on both emissions and noise levels. We know from experience that this will have a positive effect on passengers, drivers and those who live and move in the community. For Transdev, sustainability is an important issue, and we are confident that BYD as a supplier meets our requirements throughout its production chain.”

Edison Yin, BYD Regional Manager Nordics, commented: “BYD is very pleased to receive this substantial eBus order from Transdev, with whom we have a long-established business relationship that continues to evolve. We are proud to support Transdev as they expand their green fleet of zero-emission electric buses in Sweden, a country that, like BYD, is prioritising sustainability and eco-friendly solutions. BYD eBuses are playing a pivotal role in empowering the electrification of public transport across the Nordics, and we expect our latest pioneering technology to further accelerate this transition as we continue to innovate and inspire eMobility on a global scale.”
