Leading bus door manufacturer Ventura Systems is going to present a brand new door system concept at Busworld Europe in Brussels. The concept aim at “introducing the next step in driver and passenger comfort”, thanks to “a new approach to door movement and sealing properties”, the Dutch group explains.

The aim of the launch is to showcase the concept to the Busworld audience and use the feedback for further development.

What is interesting, the new bus door concept by Ventura reduces the number of wearing parts compared to conventional door systems and minimises external noise. The improved sealing properties provide maximum resistance to water and dirt ingress.

Webasto: High-Voltage Heaters for e-buses

busworld europe 2023 brussels

“Whether in electric minibuses or city buses – Webasto’s High-Voltage Heaters (HVH) convert electrical energy into heat at an efficiency close to 100 percent”, the company claims. At the Busworld Europe exhibition the company is exhibiting the latest members of its HVH family that deliver 10 and 12 kilowatts (kW) of heat output respectively. These are the second generation models of the world’s first 800-volt heater to enter series production.

Together with the new CoolTop 80-e (CT 80-e) electric rooftop air-conditioner, the heating and cooling units form the basis for feel-good temperatures all year round – from the driver’s cab to the passenger cabin. In conjunction with the intelligent Cronus Smart control unit, Webasto also combines various components from its heating and air-conditioning technology portfolio to create the centrally controllable electric Thermal Management (eTM) system, which keeps both the traction batteries and the passenger cabin at the ideal operating temperature.

Yutong U18 at Busworld Europe in Brussels

Yutong will be at the fair with four models, including some interesting innovations. In particular, Yutong will present the articulated version of the U18, being the U12 the e-bus developed for the European market already presented at Busworld 2019… and never put into service. But sources close to the Chinese group say the time has now come. The U18 will take its place in the spotlight at the Brussels show alongside the U11 double-decker, headed to the British market.

Closing the circle, an extra short (the seven-metre E7) and the three-axle battery-powered coach T15E, ready to preside over a segment, that of the zero-emission coach, which is still embryonic.

ZF: CeTrax 2 in the spotlight at Busworld

The world-premiere of ZF’s latest electric mobility low-floor solution for city buses will take place in Brussels at Busworld Europe 2023. It’ll go along with the exhibition of CeTrax 2 dual electric central drive for electric buses and coaches (also on display at UITP Summit): it offers a cont. power of 380 kW, features an integrated three-speed transmission making tackling steeper slopes easier and higher cruising speeds more efficient.

ZF mentions that at Busworld it’ll be held the “World-premiere of electric portal axle”. This should refer to the presentation of the AxTrax 2, whose series production is planned to begin in Europe in late 2024 and in the U.S. in 2025, as stated by ZF at ACT Expo earlier this year. It will be offered in two variantsAxTrax 2 with one e-drive and AxTrax 2 dual with two integrated e-drives, being the latter a real news in ZF offer (and a rarity in the e-bus segment, with just Volvo Buses so far mounting on the 7900 Electric a 2-drive transmission).

The new Scania battery-electric bus platform made its debut at Busworld on 6th October. With the introduction of low-entry 4×2 buses, the batteries offer energy storage capacity of up to 520 kWh and have been developed specifically for heavy commercial vehicles, enabling a range in optimal conditions of over 500 km, manufacturer states.

The initial introduction of the new platform is made available in low-entry 4×2 buses which will be developed in close collaboration with bodybuilder partners. The one showcased in Brussels is done with Castrosua.

Scania Low Entry intercity bus platform

These buses will be available in two performance steps – a four-battery variant with an installed capacity of 416 kWh and a five-battery variant with an installed capacity of 520 kWh. In optimal conditions, this equates to a range of more than 400 km for the former, and over 500 km for the latter.

“During the development of our new battery electric bus platform, range, performance, and battery responsibility have been key areas – all crucial to achieving viable and sustainable transport systems. Combined with our latest e-mobility services and solutions, this means we will provide complete and highly competitive solutions for urban applications in all our current regions,” says Carl-Johan Lööf, Head of Product Management, People Transport Solutions at Scania.

New Low Entry e-bus from Scania coming

The low-entry 4×2 BEV is suitable for medium and heavy-duty operations, in city, suburban, and regional applications, in both Class I and Class II. The bus comes in two different chassis widths – 2500 mm and 2550 mm – and the two different axle gears provide ratio options that work in the most challenging topography. The new electric machine (it’s unclear if it’s the one developed within Traton group or a product by Scania or external partner) “is more powerful as it comes with a newly integrated cooling system and an updated control system which meets the highest cyber security demands. The machine runs at 300 kW in peak operation and 250 kW in continuous operation”, Scania says.

High-capacity battery packs in both 4-pack (416 kWh) and 5-pack (520 kWh) configurations equate to a range of more than 400 km and 500 km respectively, in optimal conditions. The batteries have been developed and are built in partnership with Northvolt.

Multiple advanced state-of-the-art driver assistance systems (ADAS), additional safety features, and strong protection from cyber security threats provide the safest possible operation for the driver, the passengers and surrounding road users. These meet and even exceed the strict EU safety regulations for heavy commercial vehicles.

Powered by the new electrical system and Smart Dash instrument panel, the buses come with new or improved digital functionalities – from safety functions and remote diagnostics to real-time maps and over-the-air capabilities. The future-proof Smart Dash is the ultimate interface that provides wireless updates, and full integration to other digital touchpoints. It enhances the driver experience and makes it more intuitive, while also increasing operational efficiency.

“Today 90 percent of the emissions in cities comes from out of the inner urban centers. For the long distance segment, Scania Group is showcasing a LNG-powered coach, built in cooperation with Irizar, able to run for 1,200 km on a single refill. Going to suburban areas, I’m happy to introduce Scania new battery electric bus platform, with battery capacity of 520 kWh. It’s at our stand as a intercity LE bus built in cooperation with Grupo Castrosua, one of our partners” said Johanna Salomonsson Lind, Senior Vice President Head of People Transport Solutions, Scania, during the opening ceremony of Busworld Europe on 5th October.

From Wi-Fi connectivity and multiple USB charging sockets to an automatic wheelchair ramp and a highly efficient Level 4 HVAC system, the Fast Charge Dancer Bus (FC 75) model promises not only swift mobility but also an elevated passenger experience.

Developed entirely in-house, Dancer Bus monitoring technology provides for remote real-time monitoring – with the capability for 24/7 real-time monitoring, predictive diagnostics, and remote calibration – and extensive data analysis – this isn’t just about tracking; it’s about understanding. The system can process over 1,000 signals every 2 milliseconds, offering actionable insights for ongoing performance improvements and enabling remote software upgrades.

Composite technology for Dancer Bus body structure

“We found new solutions for the body structure, so in collaboration with the most advanced universities and well-known yacht and wind turbine rotor blade manufacturers, Dancer Bus engineers developed a new generation of composite materials. The body made of them is strong and light, and the possibility of using recycled plastic collected in the oceans ensures sustainability. Composite materials have replaced metal in many places – we hardly use it in the chassis either”, says the CEO Alvydas Naujėkas.

He adds: “All technologies have been tested and verified in real conditions – Dancer buses have been quietly rolling through the streets of Klaipėda city for three years. During this period, they drove more than 400 thousand kilometers saving about 0,5 million tons of CO2 emissions. Batteries were charged with 330 thousand kWh of electricity in three years, which cost 49.5 thousand euros. For comparison, the fuel costs of diesel buses would have reached about 200 thousand. euros”.

ZF at Busworld Europe 2023

ZF is gearing up to present its latest advancements in bus and coach technologies at Busworld 2023 in Brussels (October 7-12).

Also at ZF Busworld stand, the 6-speed automatic transmission system EcoLife CoachLine, suitable for engine torques up to 2,800 Nm. The transmission serves high-powered, demanding coach applications, such as winding, challenging routes as well as stop-go urban situations.

Another focus of the German group will be connectivity: new SCALAR fleet orchestration solution applied to on-demand people mobility service management, offering Public Transport Operators real-time, AI-based automated decisionmaking and service optimization.

Busworld Europe 2023 will be back at the Brussels Expo from 7th to 12th October 2023. With 500 exhibitors and an expected 40,000 visitors, Busworld Europe 2023 is set to be the ultimate one-stop shopping destination for all things related to buses and coaches. Four years after the last edition, the exhibition promises to make a real ‘bang’. Busworld Europe returns to Brussels, for the second time after the move from Courtrai, and the organisers’ expectation, as mentioned above, is to reach 40,000 visitors and 500 exhibitors.

In an interview with us in May, Busworld CEO Mieke Glorieux had quantified the number of new companies at the fair at 27 per cent. We only have to wait a little over a month to see if the 2023 edition of the fair will beat the extraordinary results of 2019, when the fair ended with 39 thousand visitors from 143 countries, 511 exhibiting companies, 309 vehicles on display and 154 speakers in the conference programme.

Van Hool, Daimler, MAN, Iveco Bus, VDL, Scania, Irizar, Ebusco, Solaris… and more

Busworld Europe 2023 boasts an impressive lineup of big names in the bus and coach sector. Industry giants like Van Hool, Daimler, MAN, Iveco Bus, VDL, Scania, Irizar, Ebusco, Solaris, Otokar, Anadolu Isuzu, Karsan and many more will be present, showcasing their latest innovations and technological advancements.

However, the excitement doesn’t end there, as the event also welcomes newer players such as JBM (India), MCV (Egypt), Marcopolo (Brazil), etc. who are eager to make their mark in this part of the world.

“With hundreds of exhibitors on display, visitors to Busworld Europe 2023 will be treated to a dazzling array of the latest buses, coaches, and a wide range of related suppliers. Whether it’s cutting-edge vehicle technology, eco-friendly solutions, or state-of-the-art safety features, the event promises to have something for everyone. Moreover, visitors will have the unique opportunity to cast their votes for the most innovative products, encouraging healthy competition and recognition of excellence. Mixing BUSiness with pleasure”, Busworld states.

This year, Busworld Europe takes a step further in enhancing the visitor experience with a new digital platform: the Busworld App. Attendees can access exhibitor profiles, product information, and the floorplan conveniently in one place. This digital platform also facilitates connections with other visitors, making networking and information exchange easier and more efficient than ever before. Visitors can prepare for their visit well in advance, allowing them to maximize their time at the event and enjoy the various offerings without feeling overwhelmed.

With the Busworld Europe 2023 exhibition just around the corner (scheduled from October 7 to 12), Otokar is gearing up to present its latest lineup of vehicles.

Otokar’s indoor booth will feature five vehicles, two of which will make their world premieres. The e-Territo, a 13-meter electric coach falling under Class 2, will be on display, showcasing the company’s strides in electric mobility for intercity travel. Also making its debut is the Kent hydrogen, a 12-meter city bus powered entirely by hydrogen fuel cells.

The e-Centro gets a driverless version

Inside the exhibition hall, attendees will have the chance to explore (again!) the e-Centro, a compact 6.6-meter electric minibus. The Ulyso T, a 10-meter diesel tourism midicoach, will be also showcased, blending traditional design with modern comforts. The Navigo U, an 8.4-meter Class 2 midicoach, will be presented with a new dashboard design.

In the outdoor dynamic presentations, Otokar will unveil an autonomous version of the e-Centro, aligning with the growing interest in self-driving technology for public transportation.

Busworld Europe 2023 is set to be live in Brussels from 7 to 12 October. Exhibitors are going to exceed 500, including a significant number of new companies (around 27% of the total). Focus? E-mobility, hydrogen, digital solutions. Among the main news, the ‘integration’ of the European Zero Emission Bus (ZEB) Conference within the programme of the exhibition (ERM Group company, Element Energy, organiser of this conference, is indeed partnering with Busworld Foundation). Together with the UITP Summit to be held in June, this will be the most awaited public transport exhibition this year.

In this interview, we sit down with Busworld’s Managing Director, Mieke Glorieux, to discuss the highly anticipated Busworld Europe 2023 event.

We are quickly heading towards Busworld Brussels in October. What attendees can expect from this year’s event?

The biggest showroom of buses and coaches on earth with the latest vehicles, components and accessories. With alongside interesting conferences and seminars about electrification digitalisation and safety. And of course like always, it will be THE bus and coach party of the year with a balanced mix of BUSiness and pleasure.

busworld europe 2023

What are some of the key trends and innovations that you anticipate will be showcased at Busworld Europe 2023?

Hydrogen of course. And many digital solutions or digital add-ons to existing components and accessories.

How is the Zero Emission Bus Conference going to fit into this year’s program?

It is a four HALF day conference. So it will be perfectly possible to go a half day to the conference and visit the show during the other half day. What you hear about in the conference can be seen and experienced in the trade show. Perfect, right?

One of the changes this year is that the trade show will start on Saturday instead of Friday, as in previous editions. What are the reasons behind this modification?

This was actually a request of the exhibitors. Now there will be 4 consecutive week days instead of 1 weekday followed by 3 week days interrupted by a weekend. It should be easier for the exhibitors and the visitors.

Busworld: focus on in-person meetings

What makes this edition particularly special or unique? 2019 results, with 39k visitors from 143 countries, 511 exhibitors, 309 vehicles on display, 154 speakers, look like not being that easy to beat…

It’s a challenge for sure, but we love challenges. Due to the pandemic and the decrease in the bus and coach business, it will not be easy. Budgets have been cut. But still we will do our best to attract the same amount of visitors. And who knows, maybe it will even beat the 2019 numbers.

In light of the two years of interruption caused by the pandemic, has anything changed in your approach to conducting trade shows?

No, not really. We believe in the power of in-person meetings. We do have a new Busworld app that will allow visitors and exhibitors to make their visit more efficient. So potential visitors can see that the show and its side program is worth the visit

Are there any specific sessions, workshops, or exhibitors at Busworld Europe 2023 that you are particularly excited about?

We are excited about ALL exhibitors and sessions. Every visitor is different, with different objectives and interests, so it would be difficult to highlight exhibitors or sessions. Just use the website and later on the application (it will be open from the beginning of September) and check out what’s interesting for you. Some conferences are payable, so make sure you book those tickets too, before it’s fully booked.

busworld europe 2023

A global brand and the industry’s challenges

What are some of the challenges or opportunities you see in the bus and coach industry today, and how does Busworld Europe address them?

Electrification is by far the biggest challenge, especially for smaller operators. It needs a lot of preparations and a big investment. That’s why we are very happy that we can organise the ZEB Conference during Busworld. The last day will be dedicated to coach and long distance, so this will be extremely interesting too.

Busworld has become a global brand, with exhibitions from Asia to Latin America, from Turkey to the latest add North America. Can you give us an idea about how the European edition fits into this “environment”?

The European show is the oldest and by far the biggest. While the other shows are rather local, the ‘Europe’ show covers the whole world. We have vehicles from Egypt, Brazil, India, China and so on. If you want to compare the shows, the best way is to see the Europe show as the mother show and the other shows as its children. Waiting to grow and see if they can reach adulthood or not.

The one scheduled for 2021 and then postponed until October this year is the 50th anniversary edition of Busworld. If you had to condense 50 years of history into a single image, what significant event or anecdote would it represent?

I think it would be an image of visitors and exhibitors together with the animation team, singing, dancing and smiling together. Because let’s face it, it’s always been fun!
