From Yutong’s evolving portfolio of e-coaches to the challenges and strategies associated with promoting electric coaches in Europe. From the sales model employed by Yutong in the European market the the group’s strategic approach to market expansion, with a primary focus on the Nordic regions, passing through a focus on the local content of Yutong buses and the potential localization of production in Europe.

These and more topics were on the table of our interview with Jack Li, CEO Europe at Yutong, shedding light on Yutong’s vision and strategies in the rapidly evolving zero emission bus market of the old continent.

Our goal is to expand our market share, and we have devised a strategy focused on enhancing the local content of our buses. We are incorporating various European components, such as the Actia cockpit, ZF axles, Michelin tires, to name a few examples.

CATL is in the process of establishing a plant in Hungary with the objective of commencing production by the end of 2024. As a result, we are planning to procure battery modules from Europe in the future. To achieve this, we must secure robust sales to support our investment in localizing production. Timing of this strategy will depend on sales.

Jack Li, CEO Europe at Yutong
jack li ceo yutong europe

At Busworld, held in early October in Brussels, Yutong displayed four models, including some interesting innovations. In particular, Yutong has unveiled the articulated version of the U18. Secondly, time has come for the U11 double-decker, headed to the British market.

Closing the circle, an extra short (the seven-metre E7) and the three-axle battery-powered coach T15E, ready to preside over a segment, that of the zero-emission coach, which is still embryonic.

Jack Li, CEO Europe at Yutong, on the business case for e-coaches in Europe

Your range of e-coaches for Europe is today made of ICE12 and T15. Should we expect changes and/or addition?

I know our competitors haven’t launched electric coaches so far in the market. We have already launched the ICE12 a few years ago, headed to commuter services and coach applications. We have sold around 200 units in Europe.

The new model displayed at Busworld Europe 2023 belongs to the T series. The T15 can carry up to 61 passengers with a battery up to 630 kWh. It is addressed mainly at the Nordic region, where such length is widely adopted.

jack li ceo yutong europe

Demand for electric coaches hasn’t already kicked off in Europe…

Electric coaches, being very honest, are expensive in terms of upfront cost. Subsidies are required. In Norway there are fundings that cover 40% of the gap between a diesel and an electric coach. This is a stimulus for us to develop and bring to the European market electric coaches. We see this market to grow in the next few years.

Which tools are you offering to make the purchase more affordable?

Coach operators are mainly small and medium companies, therefore we offer leasing options

The focus of Yutong on Europe

Which is the sales model you are using in Europe? Directly present or through dealers?

We use a multiple sales model. We prefer to establish close relations with end users. Having a dealer is one of the main ways to increase presence on a market, as local companies are more familiar with customers and local regulations, but we found that this model has its own drawbacks. Therefore we opt for a diversified sales mode: if the customer is an international bus operator, we prefer to establish direct relations instead of using dealers. If the customer is a medium-sized company, we don’t have enough resources to reach and look after the customer, therefore we collaborate with partners.

In some markets we are not present due to barriers and protectionism, and also in those markets distributors can offer a precious help.

jack li ceo yutong europe

Therefore you have established a network of partners?

In some markets we haven’t entered so far. The precondition for us to enter a market is to be sure that the business we can realize is a sustainable business. We are not interested in entering markets in a rush. We have to evaluate competitions and resources in any market before entering these.

How’s Yutong currently structured for the European market, then? Which are the countries you are targeting most?

At the moment we are focused on developing in the Nordic regions. Then we’ll go west, and finally towards the South region.

jack li ceo yutong europe

Any plans for localization of production in Europe?

Our goal is to expand our market share, and we have devised a strategy focused on enhancing the local content of our buses. We are incorporating various European components, such as the Actia cockpit, ZF axles, Michelin tires, to name a few examples.

CATL is in the process of establishing a plant in Hungary with the objective of commencing production by the end of 2024. As a result, we are planning to procure battery modules from Europe in the future. To achieve this, we must secure robust sales to support our investment in localizing production. Timing of this strategy will depend on sales.

Our aim is to ensure the satisfaction of all stakeholders, which includes not only Public Transport Operators (PTOs) but also Public Transport Authorities (PTAs), municipalities, and institutions. Therefore, we are actively working to enhance the local content of our products.

What about the Yutong U 12 bus model, introduced in 2019? Is it still on the rise?

jack li ceo yutong europe

E12 is our typical city bus model, we have already realized over 1,000 sales in Europe. It’s widely proven. But technology continues to develop: the U series adopt more intelligent functions as long as a lightweight construction that reduces weight significantly, benefitting energy consumption.

The U series is already on the market and allows us to provide a wider offer to our customers. Yutong E12 and U12 will be offered in parallel for some time. They are both in series production as of now.

Rampini, the first time ever at Busworld

rampini busworld

Italian bus builder Rampini participates for the first time in its history in Busworld Europe in Brussels and shows its full portfolio of Zero Emission buses in a compact size. The highlight is the presentation of the new Hydrogen Range Extender midibus Hydron, that goes into production in 2024.

Also the electric version of the eight meter Midibus Eltron is featured with a new Design called “Stile Energetico”, made by the prestigious Italian Design Studio Vernacchia.

Last but not least the smallest family member with six meters length joins the show: the SIXTRON for up to 28 passengers – also fully electric.

Rampini developed the Hydron bus using its battery-electric bus model, with modifications to incorporate fuel storage and a Loop Energy S300 (30 kW) fuel cell engine (the cooperation with the Canadian fuel cell supplier was kicked off at NME 2022 in Milan). At 8-metres long, the bus has capacity for up to 48 passengers and is fitted with a 10.8 kilogram hydrogen tank that allows for a range of 450 kilometres. The extended range of the bus means operators do not have to refuel while in service.

Safra: welcome HYCITY! Bluebus with new 6m

safra hycity

“We will display the HYCITY at the Busworld trade show in Brussels. It is a great opportunity to do the first public presentation of our new generation hydrogen bus – here what Safra Chief Commercial Officer Eric Baleviez, who joined the French company in early 2022, told us in July 2023 -. Since the announcement of this new product at the Paris 2022 Euro Mobility Expo our engineering teams worked hard to design our new hydrogen vehicle taking into account customers and market expectations in terms of performances, maintainability, road behaviour, customization capabilities. It takes time to do this properly, in a pragmatic step by step approach. We are now ready to deliver and with already a very nice order book” (ten units are going to be delivered in Dunkirk).

Let’s stay in France: Bluebus is going to take the opportunity of the expo to reveal the second generation of its Bluebus 6m electric minibus. “This new model of bluebus is more spacious, better suited to city centres and complies with the EBSF (European Bus System of the Future) standard”, the French company states.

Scania shows LNG-powered coach and new electric bus platform

Ventura with new bus door concept in Brussels

ventura new bus door busworld

Leading bus door manufacturer Ventura Systems is going to present a brand new door system concept at Busworld Europe in Brussels. The concept aim at “introducing the next step in driver and passenger comfort”, thanks to “a new approach to door movement and sealing properties”, the Dutch group explains.

The aim of the launch is to showcase the concept to the Busworld audience and use the feedback for further development.

What is interesting, the new bus door concept by Ventura reduces the number of wearing parts compared to conventional door systems and minimises external noise. The improved sealing properties provide maximum resistance to water and dirt ingress.

Webasto: High-Voltage Heaters for e-buses

busworld europe 2023 brussels

“Whether in electric minibuses or city buses – Webasto’s High-Voltage Heaters (HVH) convert electrical energy into heat at an efficiency close to 100 percent”, the company claims. At the Busworld Europe exhibition the company is exhibiting the latest members of its HVH family that deliver 10 and 12 kilowatts (kW) of heat output respectively. These are the second generation models of the world’s first 800-volt heater to enter series production.

Together with the new CoolTop 80-e (CT 80-e) electric rooftop air-conditioner, the heating and cooling units form the basis for feel-good temperatures all year round – from the driver’s cab to the passenger cabin. In conjunction with the intelligent Cronus Smart control unit, Webasto also combines various components from its heating and air-conditioning technology portfolio to create the centrally controllable electric Thermal Management (eTM) system, which keeps both the traction batteries and the passenger cabin at the ideal operating temperature.

Yutong U18 at Busworld Europe in Brussels

Yutong will be at the fair with four models, including some interesting innovations. In particular, Yutong will present the articulated version of the U18, being the U12 the e-bus developed for the European market already presented at Busworld 2019… and never put into service. But sources close to the Chinese group say the time has now come. The U18 will take its place in the spotlight at the Brussels show alongside the U11 double-decker, headed to the British market.

Closing the circle, an extra short (the seven-metre E7) and the three-axle battery-powered coach T15E, ready to preside over a segment, that of the zero-emission coach, which is still embryonic.

ZF: CeTrax 2 in the spotlight at Busworld

The world-premiere of ZF’s latest electric mobility low-floor solution for city buses will take place in Brussels at Busworld Europe 2023. It’ll go along with the exhibition of CeTrax 2 dual electric central drive for electric buses and coaches (also on display at UITP Summit): it offers a cont. power of 380 kW, features an integrated three-speed transmission making tackling steeper slopes easier and higher cruising speeds more efficient.

ZF mentions that at Busworld it’ll be held the “World-premiere of electric portal axle”. This should refer to the presentation of the AxTrax 2, whose series production is planned to begin in Europe in late 2024 and in the U.S. in 2025, as stated by ZF at ACT Expo earlier this year. It will be offered in two variantsAxTrax 2 with one e-drive and AxTrax 2 dual with two integrated e-drives, being the latter a real news in ZF offer (and a rarity in the e-bus segment, with just Volvo Buses so far mounting on the 7900 Electric a 2-drive transmission).

Yutong new EV architecture: weight savings in the spotlight

The brand-new architecture integrates hardware and software and was developed in-house by Yutong. Some highlights: batteries have higher energy and enhanced safety standard, with improved water and fire resistance. The third-generation e-axle reduces weight by approximately half and energy consumption by 15%. MW-level supercharge system was also improved.

“Through improving structure, using high-strength and light materials, and adopting advanced technology to improve light weight level, weight of 8-meter, 10-meter and 12-meter Yutong full-electric bus is decreases by 10%-20%, and energy consumption is decreases over 10% while carrying the same passenger capacity”, the manufacturer states.

yutong yea

And adds: “With YEA, Yutong achieves seamless integration of software and hardware, thereby significantly enhancing product safety, reliability, and efficiency. The platform delivers super-integration, scalability, and self-evolution, therefore meeting full-scenario requirements of different commercial vehicle segments”.

YEA is made of two core components: C-architecture and YOS. They form the technical basis of the EV architecture. The C-architecture serves as the intelligent “brain” of the commercial vehicle. It comprises a “central computing unit, multi-in-one controller, intelligent cabin domain controller, and advanced driving assistance domain controller.” YOS is the name of the commercial vehicle operating system, a self-developed OS with C-architecture. “The combination of these two core components facilitates functional fusion and redistribution, resulting in a 200% increase in computing power and a 100% improvement in control efficiency”, Yutong states.

Mexico City is undergoing a major transformation in its trolleybus network, through a massive fleet renewal (320 new trolleybus delivered in the last 4 years) and the upcoming launch of a new BRT line. With a fleet renewal plan and new BRT lines, the city aims to enhance public transportation and reduce travel times.

Mexico City is one of the largest cities in the world, about 9,200,000 inhabitants, and has an extension of about 50 km. The transport service is impressive, the metro network alone has 12 lines, 200 km of network and 195 stations. There is also a fast tramway, two urban cableways and 10 trolleybus lines, some of which are of considerable length, even exceeding 30 km; in particular, line 1 stretches 36 km and line 4, which runs almost 45 km from east to west through the city.

Trolleybus network in Mexico City: 102 vehicles shortly on order

The trolleybus network, in particular, is now the object of special attention from the government of Mexico City. In 2019, a massive and radical renewal of the trolleybus fleet has been decided, planning the purchase of 522 new vehicles, some of them high-capacity, 18-metre long, and a development of the network with new BRT lines, with the aim of reducing travel times.

The government’s intention is to make the most out of the trolleybus mode, using the latest technology and expanding the network. From 2020 to 2023, the manufacturer Yutong has delivered 320 new trolleybuses (a large delivery for 130 units took place in mid 2020), another 100 were ordered on 19 December 2022, and further 102 vehicles will be ordered soon.

At the same time, modernisation of the newest trolleybuses, made of Volvo Mistubishi 9700 series built between 1997 and 1999, began in 2019.

The new trolleybuses have made it possible to regularise operations on all lines, and extensions of lines without infrastructure have already been planned, as in the case of line 5 an Felipe de Jesús-Metro Hidalgo’, which can be extended to the Glorieta del Ahuehuete on Avenida Paseo de la Reforma.

mexico city trolleybus network

Mexico City and the ‘Trolebus Elevado’

Line 10 is the most recent development, and also the most unusual. It is in fact the ‘Trolebus Elevado‘, an elevated reserved line, which entered into pre-operation on 11 September 2022 and has been fully operational since 15 October of the same year. The terminuses are the Constitución 1917 (terminal of metro line 8) and Santa Marta stations, the municipality served is Iztapalapa, 9 are the intermediate stops in service.

The line is currently 8 km long, but a new section, also 8 km long, is already planned for completion within two years. There are currently 25 trolleybuses in operation, 8 of which are articulated and 17 are 2-axle. The dedicated running route makes it possible to complete the route in 20 minutes instead of the 60 minutes required by a line without a reserved lane, and allows certainly competitive frequencies, one run every 2-3 minutes.

Mexico City, a new BRT line in the spotlight

The positive results of “ trolebus elevado” led to the decision to build a new BRT trolleybus line in the reserved lane between the city of Chalco, population 180,000, bordering Mexico City, and Santa Marta. The line, 18.5 long, will have 15 stops, and will allow the journey time between Chalco and Mexico City to be reduced from 2 hours to 45 minutes; a fast service will also be planned, with only a few stops and a journey time of just 33 minutes.

There will also be important interchange possibilities with line 10 at Santa Marta district, a hub that also includes the cable car line 2 stop (Cablebus) and the metro line A. The line will first run on a dedicated viaduct, with three stations, from Santa Marta to Ele 10, then connect to the central lane of the Mexico – Puebla highway, with four stations, and finally run along the Avenida de Mexico – Cuautla to Chalco, where there will be a terminus station and a new depot.

The line is currently under construction and should open by the middle of this year. 120,000 passengers per day will be able to travel on the new route in the first few years of operation and, when fully operational, 230,000 passengers per day.

The large number of new trolleybuses and two new trolleybus lines are certainly an important milestone for the Mexican capital, which will be able to rely on a modern, zero-emission mode of transport in the future.

Yutong UY dealer Pelican announces it has completed deliveries of a further 41 Yutong zero emission vehicles to McGill’s Bus Group.

This second tranche of vehicles increases the Yutong fleet in McGill’s to 96 vehicles, after 55 were delivered prior to COP 26 in November 2021. It should be mentioned that Yutong placed first in the European electric bus market 2022.

These were funded in part from the Scottish Governments SCOTZEB scheme (for a focus on funding scheme on zero emission buses in UK, click HERE), and took less than 12 months from order to delivery.

THE 134,000th  zero emission vehicle that Yutong has produced

Ian Downie, Head of Yutong UK “these deliveries are a very important milestone for Pelican and Yutong. One of the vehicles, SG23OSM, Is not only the 134,000th  zero emission vehicle that Yutong has produced, but it is one of the contract that takes Pelican to over 250 delivered zero emission vehicles in the UK. The product is tried, tested and very reliable. It thrives in Scotland’s operating conditions, irrespective of the weather! We are delighted to have worked with McGill’s to be in the vanguard of delivering a sustainable passenger transport solution for the West of Scotland population. The customer centric specification that McGill’s has developed will ensure that more passengers will enjoy quiet, air conditioned journeys whilst encouraging modal shift onto public transport.

Ralph Roberts, McGill’s CEO, “ Pelican and Yutong have been the perfect delivery partners in our journey to net zero. When we were researching our options at the beginning, the Yutong product stood out head & shoulders above the rest. This milestone of 134,000 zero emission vehicles lets everyone understand why – there is real strength in depth in the product. The Yutong zero emission buses cover over 7 billion miles per annum worldwide and rising every year – this kind of success is build on performance, not chance. We are very happy with the product, with the service delivery and with the relationships “

On February 20th a fleet of 50 new articulated electric buses were formally incorporated into Line 3 of Mexico City’s public transport system.

The city’s transport authority, Metrobús, is a decentralised public entity managing the bus rapid transit (BRT) service through a network spanning 283 stations, seven bus lines and 140 kilometres, which service 1.8 million daily riders. Mexico City now has the largest fleet of articulated e-buses in Latin America and one of the largest worldwide.

Full fleet electrification by 2035

Metrobús’s target is to electrify its entire bus fleet by 2035. To fulfill this commitment, Metrobús sought technical assistance from the Zero-Emission Bus Rapid Deployment Accelerator (ZEBRA), a partnership led by C40 Cities and the International Council on Clean Transport (ICCT), with support from the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). ZEBRA assists public authorities in Latin America to deploy low-carbon e-mobility projects and enable replication and scaling-up of best practice across the region.

Opened in 2011, Metrobús’s Line 3 (L3) is 20.4km long and has 38 stations. As L3 reached its tenth year of operation, ZEBRA supported Metrobús with the phase-out of its diesel-fuelled fleet with articulated e-buses. The technical assistance provided facilitated electrification of Metrobús’s L3 line, along with documented learnings from a 2021 pilot, in which ten Yutong articulated electric buses were deployed. The e-bus fleet’s impressive performance persuaded both Metrobús and MIVSA (the BRT’s operator) to acquire more electric buses.

Technical assistance was made possible thanks to the political commitment secured by C40, through Mexico City’s inclusion as a signatory city in C40’s Green and Healthy Streets Accelerator, along with almost four years of technical assistance from ZEBRA’s partners. This technical assistance included:

  • Defining e-bus technical specifications;
  • Monitoring and evaluation of the city’s first e-bus pilot fleet;
  • E-bus route modelling and total cost of ownership (TCO) analyses;
  • Support in waiving import fees for e-buses;
  • Assessment of Metrobús’s financial model;
  • Assessment and recommendation of the best credit options offered by financial institutions;
  • Technical support to structure the city’s Request for Proposal documents and legal documentation;
  • Recommendations surrounding the construction of charging infrastructure;
  • Dissemination of Mexico City’s experience with other cities in the region.

Most technical assessments were conducted by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), and are publicly available. C40 and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) delivered complementary technical, legal and financial assistance relating to the RFP process.

Mexico City Metrobús: e-buses are an alternative

In March 2022 a strategy for the deployment of an electric fleet in Mexico City’s “Metrobús” L3 and L4 lines was launched. The report confirmed what other ZEBRA cities in Latin America and cities around the world have demonstrated: electric buses are a viable alternative for the renovation of diesel fleets, not only from an economic point of view, but also because they reduce local and climate pollutants.

In July 2022 ZEBRA also worked with Metrobús to hold an event for local operators, called “The road to electromobility of the Metrobús,” where operators, investors, and manufacturers came together to learn more about electromobility in public transport. (This fact sheet outlines ZEBRA’s work on Mexico City’s first ten e-buses.)

At the end of 2022, the ICCT also launched two new reports: the first one on the energy consumption of articulated electric buses for different load levels in the Mexico City’s bus rapid transit system. In December, an analysis of electric bus performance in Mexico City was launched, which reported that the city’s e-buses met operating requirements, driving between 250 km and 325 km during two-thirds of the 10-month monitoring period. During 99% of this timeframe, the energy consumption per kilometer traveled remained in the 0.86-1.0 kWh/km range. Similarly, the energy regenerated by the braking system remained in the 21-24% range, equivalent to approximately 130 kWh per day.

Between March and October 2022, GGGI assessed and enhanced documents and technical annexes relating to a request for proposals (RFP) for the provision of the charging infrastructure. It also supported Metrobús with the tendering process and developed a set of evaluation criteria to inform the selection of the most cost-efficient and technically accomplished proposals. In parallel, GGGI also assessed the project’s financial model, providing recommendations to make it more robust, as well as providing Metrobús with transaction advisory services to select the best credit terms among a diverse range of financial providers (development and commercial banks).

Wireless EV charging company WiTricity, the leader in wireless EV charging, announced a collaboration with Yutong to provide wireless charging for the Chinese brand’s autonomous buses.

This marks “the first-ever commercial application of wireless charging for an autonomous electric e-bus, with WiTricity providing a key feature in one of the most advanced public transportation systems in the world”, the supplier says.

First application on commercial vehicles for WiTricity (with Yutong)

The commercial deployment of wireless charging in Yutong’s e-buses will debut in Zhengzhou, China, on the Xiaoyu 2.0 autonomous minibus. The level 4 autonomous bus that seats 10 passengers has a range of 150 km.

WiTricity Halo chargers use magnetic resonance technology and have the goal of semplifying the charging experience by removing the need to plug in. WiTricity has seen the deployment of its wireless EV charging to date in passenger vehicles. Taxi trials are also underway.

“We are so excited to see this first real demonstration with YuTong Bus of wireless charging powering autonomy at scale,” said Alex Gruzen, CEO of WiTricity. “As autonomy progresses, the logistics of charging and servicing will become even more critical. WiTricity wireless EV charging can enable the next generation of electrified transportation and logistics.”

Newport Transport has retrofitted 31 Yutong electric buses with Journeo digital mirrors, with a further 12 vehicles set to have the technology installed (named Journeo Camera Monitor System – CMS).

The technology includes automatic adjustment between day- and night-time settings that needs no action on the part of the driver. Engineers also saw the benefits of the design, which keeps all computing components inside the vehicle, making it easy to replace or repair if the digital wing camera becomes damaged, Journeo says.

The system can be retrofitted to many types of vehicle, as well as installed to new buses in factories.

Journeo Camera Monitor System for Newport Transport

The benefits of Journeo estimates “115% increase in the distance driven between accidents”, “reduction of accident costs by 60% and maintenance costs by almost 40%, with an ROI of just 18 months in some cases”.

Using high-definition cameras, Journeo CMS “eradicates blind spots and increases visibility in all road conditions, with many drivers commenting on how much it improves the view of their surroundings. Because the cameras are far smaller than wing mirrors, they are also much less likely to hit trees, street furniture and other objects”, the supplier strenghtens.

Scott Pearson, Managing Director of Newport Transport, commented: “When we trialled the Journeo CMS we were particularly impressed by the quality of the images it provides to drivers, giving them a much better view compared to mirrors. Increasing the safety of road users is a key part of our aim to make our services greener, smarter and safer, as we encourage the public to make the switch to green, fully electric public transport.”

Mark Johnson, Director of Fleet Systems at Journeo, commented: “The Journeo CMS is a proven on-vehicle technology that is capable of increasing safety for road users and the public, while decreasing transport costs. Newport Transport has recognised the benefits and taken the forward-thinking decision to replace wing mirrors with the system. We are seeing more and more regional bus operators follow their lead and choose to install this system to make their drivers’ lives easier and to protect their local communities.”
